Overview
San Basilio de Palenque is a village in the Mahates municipality about 70km southeast of Cartagena, founded in 1603 by escaped slave leader Benkos Biohó and 36 companions - recognized as the first free town in the Americas. UNESCO designated it an Intangible Cultural Heritage site in 2005, and the village still preserves its own Palenquero creole language along with traditional Mapalé and Bullerengue music and dance. The round trip from Cartagena takes about 1.5 hours each way; most visitors go on an organized tour that includes the Benkos Biohó monument, the central plaza and church, a traditional music performance, and a home-cooked lunch with a local family. Tour prices range from roughly COP 290,000 to 485,000 depending on the operator; it's possible to visit far more cheaply by public transport (Transcaribe plus a local bus), but a guide is recommended to appreciate the historical context.

Travel Tips
Without a guide it's easy to miss the village's historical significance, so a tour is recommended. October brings the Festival de Tambores, when visitor numbers peak.
