Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower Gate)

Old Town, Cartagena

Overview

Construction of the Clock Tower Gate (Puerta del Reloj) began in 1601 and was completed in 1631 as the formal entrance to the Walled City. Originally known as 'Boca del Puente,' it once had a drawbridge connecting to Getsemaní. The current octagonal clock tower and neo-Gothic facade date from an 1888 restoration led by architect Luis Felipe Jaspe. The roughly 30-meter tower holds a Swiss-imported clock and was named one of the world's five most beautiful clock towers by BBC Travel in 2013. Passing through the gate leads to Plaza de los Coches, making it a natural start or end point for exploring the Walled City. There is no admission fee.

Travel Tips

The tower looks best when lit up around sunset. Most Walled City walking tours start or end right here.
