Begun in 1536 and completed in the 18th century, Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is South America's largest Spanish colonial fortress. Designed to repel pirates and British fleets, it features an intricate network of underground tunnels engineered to amplify sound and detect approaching enemies. From the ramparts you can see both Cartagena's old town and its modern skyline - a masterpiece of Spanish colonial military architecture.
