Convento de la Popa (La Popa Monastery)

La Popa, Cartagena

Overview

Convento de la Popa (formally Convento de Santa Cruz de la Popa) is a 17th-century Augustinian monastery perched atop Cartagena's highest hill, about 150 meters above sea level. Named for its resemblance to a ship's stern (popa), the hill has been a site of religious pilgrimage since colonial times. Today its whitewashed walls, cloisters, and chapel are popular for the sweeping views over the Walled City, Bocagrande, and the Caribbean Sea. Admission runs roughly COP 11,000-13,000 (about 3,700-4,400 KRW) for adults. Because the road up is steep, most visitors take a round-trip taxi rather than walking, which is also discouraged for safety reasons.

💰 Tickets
