Overview
A market square since the 13th century, Alexanderplatz was rebuilt during the East German era as a showcase of socialist urban planning, giving it today's broad plaza and large-scale buildings. The World Clock (Weltzeituhr), erected in 1969, displays the time in major cities around the globe and remains Berliners' classic meeting spot. Department stores, malls, and cafes cluster around the square, and it's an easy walk to the Fernsehturm TV tower, making the two easy to combine.
