Overview
Operating from 1961 to 1990 as the foreigners-only crossing between East and West Berlin, Checkpoint Charlie is one of the Cold War's most iconic sites — including the 1961 standoff when American and Soviet tanks faced off, nearly triggering WWIII. Today, a replica guard hut and famous photo of a US soldier mark the spot, and the nearby Wall Museum (Mauermuseum) displays the ingenious devices used in East German escape attempts — submarines, hot-air balloons, car trunks, and more. Checkpoint free; museum about EUR 17.50. 2-minute walk from U-Bahn Kochstraße (Line 6).
Opening Hours
Checkpoint open 24 hours; museum 09:00-22:00
Travel Tips
The spot itself is touristy and a bit commercialized — set expectations accordingly. The Wall Museum next door provides much deeper historical context.
