Overview

Used as France's royal palace from 1682 under the Sun King Louis XIV, Versailles is Europe's largest Baroque palace. The 73-meter Hall of Mirrors gleams with 357 mirrors, and the 800-hectare gardens are studded with 1,400 fountains. It also witnessed the events leading to the French Revolution, and the estate includes Marie Antoinette's beloved Petit Trianon. The whole site is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Palace admission EUR 21 (gardens free; fountain show extra). 10-minute walk from RER C Versailles Château-Rive Gauche station.

09:00-18:30 (until 17:30 from November to March; closed Tuesdays)

Travel Tips

About 40 minutes from central Paris on RER line C. Closed Tuesdays, and the Musical Fountain Shows run in the gardens on weekends from April to October.
