Overview
Laid out in 1755 in honor of Louis XV, this square became the site of the guillotine during the French Revolution, where around 1,200 people were executed, including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. At its center stands the 3,300-year-old Luxor Obelisk, gifted by Egypt in 1836, and the square anchors the grand axis linking the Champs-Elysees and the Tuileries Garden. The obelisk and fountains are beautifully illuminated at night. Admission is free. Right at Metro Concorde (Lines 1/8/12).
