Overview
Built in 1484 on the order of Ishak Pasha, a high Ottoman official, this charitable complex and mosque is regarded as one of the best-preserved Ottoman-era buildings in Thessaloniki. Its name 'Alaca' ('colorful') comes from the distinctive alternating red-and-white brick pattern on its facade. Originally a multi-purpose charitable complex (imaret) combining an Islamic school, soup kitchen, and travelers' lodge, it is one of the few mosques in the city to retain its intact minaret. It's a quiet historical gem easily encountered while wandering Ano Poli. Free to view from outside. 5-minute walk from central Ano Poli.
