Overview
Located about 70km from Thessaloniki at Vergina (ancient Aigai), this UNESCO World Heritage Site holds the royal tombs of ancient Macedon, discovered in 1977 by Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos in what is considered one of the century's greatest excavations. Found undisturbed, the tomb of Philip II (father of Alexander the Great) yielded solid gold larnakes (funerary caskets), a gold wreath, weapons, and armor, all remarkably intact. The burial mound has been preserved intact and transformed into an underground museum, offering an immersive sense of entering the tombs themselves. Widely regarded as one of Greek archaeology's greatest discoveries, a guided tour is highly recommended. Admission about EUR 12. About an hour's drive from Thessaloniki, also available as a day tour.
