Overview
Built over the 7th-8th centuries in the Byzantine style modeled on Constantinople's Hagia Sophia, this cathedral is one of Thessaloniki's UNESCO-listed early Christian and Byzantine monuments. Its vast dome preserves a 9th-century mosaic of the Ascension of Christ, considered a masterpiece of Byzantine art. Converted into a mosque with a minaret during Ottoman rule, it reverted to a church after Greece's liberation in 1912. Centrally located and easy to reach, it remains an active place of worship today. Free entry. 10-minute walk from Aristotelous Square.
