Set midway up the Ano Poli hillside, this 14th-century Byzantine monastery is one of the few still-active Byzantine monasteries in Thessaloniki. Tradition holds it was built where the Apostle Paul once preached during his visit to the city, and it is part of the UNESCO-listed group of Byzantine monuments. Peaceful gardens and a courtyard where peacocks roam add a serene atmosphere, and the terrace offers a panorama over the Thermaic Gulf and city that rivals the view from the Heptapyrgion. Free entry. About a 10-minute walk within Ano Poli.
