Overview
Built in 1902 by Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli, this mosque has an unusual history: it was constructed for the Dönme community, descendants of Jews who had converted to Islam in the late Ottoman era. Its eclectic architecture blends Islamic, Art Nouveau, and Jewish Star of David motifs, with a Star of David carved into the facade revealing its unique religious background. It ceased functioning as a mosque after Thessaloniki's liberation in 1912 and now hosts temporary exhibitions and art galleries. Set in a quiet residential part of the city center, it's easy to explore at a relaxed pace. Free entry (varies by exhibition). 15-minute walk from Aristotelous Square.
Travel Tips
Look closely for the Star of David on the facade. Opening depends on current exhibitions, so check ahead.
