Overview
Opened in 1994 and winner of the Council of Europe Museum Prize, this museum devoted to Byzantine culture presents art, religion, and daily life from the 4th to 15th centuries in thematic, chronological galleries. Its holdings include early Christian frescoes and mosaics, icons, jewelry, pottery, and textiles, with a particularly striking recreation of an actual tomb excavation. As Thessaloniki was long called the Byzantine Empire's 'second city', the collection here is vast and world-class. Admission about EUR 8. 5-minute walk from Sindrivani metro station (Line 1).
