Overview
Housed in a former Jewish-owned building from 1904, this museum documents 500 years of the Jewish community that made Thessaloniki 'the Jerusalem of the Balkans' after Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain settled here in the 15th century. That community, which comprised nearly half the city's population in the early 20th century, was largely murdered in the Holocaust during the Nazi occupation. The museum records both this tragedy and the vibrant prewar culture, Ladino language, and customs of the community, through photographs, documents, religious artifacts, and remnants of former synagogues. Admission about EUR 3. 8-minute walk from Aristotelous Square.
