Overview
Fatehpur Sikri was built in 1571 by Emperor Akbar as the Mughal capital, serving that role for 14 years before being abandoned due to water shortages. This UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves red sandstone palaces, mosques, and courtyards in near-perfect condition. The Panch Mahal (five-story tower), Buland Darwaza (54m gateway), and Jama Masjid are especially awe-inspiring. About 40 minutes by car from Agra, making it an easy day trip. Admission INR 610 for foreigners. About 40 minutes by taxi from Agra.
