Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj)

Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Overview

Built in 1628 by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, Itimad-ud-Daulah is a white marble mausoleum completed about four years before the Taj Mahal. It was the first Mughal structure to use pietra dura (gemstone inlay) on marble, serving as a prototype for the Taj Mahal and earning the nickname 'Baby Taj.' Situated on the east bank of the Yamuna River, its intricate lattice screens and delicate floral inlays rival the Taj in beauty. Admission INR 310 for foreigners. About 15 minutes by auto-rickshaw from the Taj Mahal.

Opening Hours

Daily, sunrise to sunset

Travel Tips

Far fewer tourists than the Taj, making it ideal for unhurried photography. Visit at sunset to see the marble glow golden.
