Overview
Plaza Independencia is Mendoza's largest and most important square, located in the heart of downtown and serving as the center of city life. Designed during the city's reconstruction after the 1861 earthquake, it features fountain-lined walkways shaded by trees. An underground modern art museum (Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno) displays Argentine contemporary art, and weekend craft markets set up in the square. Surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and hotels, it's the ideal starting point for sightseeing. Square and market free. Located in the city center.
Travel Tips
Visit on weekend evenings for a lively local atmosphere. Four satellite plazas sit one block in each direction from the main square, making a pleasant walking loop.
