Overview
Founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, Bodega Catena Zapata is credited with modernizing Argentine Malbec winemaking. Its striking pyramid-shaped building in Agrelo is modeled on Mayan architecture. Tours are by reservation only; the 'Renaissance of Malbec' tour costs around USD 100 per person for a 2-hour visit through the barrel room and vineyards with a tasting of four premium wines. It's about a 30-minute drive south of Mendoza city, making it ideal for a half-day excursion.
