Overview
Hellbrunn Palace was built in 1615 by Salzburg's Archbishop Markus Sittikus as a summer retreat, and is world-famous for its trick fountains (Wasserspiele) that have operated for over 400 years. During the guided tour, water jets spray from unexpected places to surprise visitors — delightful fun for adults and children alike. The palace grounds also feature the glass gazebo where 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' was filmed in The Sound of Music. Admission about EUR 13.50 (including trick fountains). About 20 minutes by bus 25 from the city center.
Opening Hours
Apr-Oct: 09:00-17:30 (until 18:00 Jul-Aug; Nov-Mar palace only).
Travel Tips
In summer, you'll dry quickly if splashed, but a waterproof jacket adds to the fun. Sound of Music fans should look for the glass gazebo.
