Overview
Laid out in 1606, this Baroque palace and garden became world-famous as the location where Maria and the children sang 'Do-Re-Mi' in The Sound of Music. Geometrically arranged flower beds, fountains, Greek mythological statues, and a rose garden frame Hohensalzburg Fortress in the background — Salzburg's most photogenic spot. The palace's Marble Hall hosts regular classical concerts. Gardens free, open year-round. About 10 minutes on foot from Salzburg main station.
Opening Hours
Gardens: 06:00 to dusk (open daily); palace: 08:00-18:00.
Travel Tips
Photographing the fortress from the garden gives you Salzburg's best shot. Summer evening concerts in the Marble Hall are also highly recommended.
