Overview
Nonnberg Abbey was founded by Saint Rupert around 712-715 AD, making it the oldest continuously existing nunnery in the German-speaking world, perched on a hill near Hohensalzburg Fortress. It's where Maria Kutschera, the real-life inspiration for The Sound of Music, was a postulant, and where she actually married Georg von Trapp in 1927. The nuns' living quarters are closed to the public, but the church is open to visitors and features Romanesque frescoes. Free admission. A steep 15-20 minute walk uphill from the Old Town; not wheelchair accessible.
