Overview
Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church) was dedicated by Emperor Charles VI to St. Charles Borromeo to mark the end of the 1713 plague that swept Vienna, and was built between 1716 and 1737. Two colossal columns modeled on Rome's Trajan's Column flank the facade, and a green copper dome dominates Karlsplatz. A panorama lift carries visitors close to the dome's ceiling frescoes, and composer Antonio Vivaldi, who died in Vienna in 1741, is believed to be buried nearby. Admission is about EUR 8-9.50 for adults, including the dome lift, treasury, and organ loft. 3-minute walk from Karlsplatz station (U1/U2/U4).
