Secession Building

Innere Stadt, Vienna

Overview

The Secession building was built as the exhibition hall of the Vienna Secession movement founded in 1897 by artists including Gustav Klimt, designed by architect Joseph Maria Olbrich. Its gilded laurel-leaf dome and the facade inscription 'To every age its art, to art its freedom' are iconic, and the basement permanently displays Klimt's 34m 'Beethoven Frieze' (1902), inspired by Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It's close to the Naschmarkt and Karlsplatz, making it easy to combine into a walking tour. Admission about EUR 12-13 for adults (discounted during exhibition changeovers). 4-minute walk from Karlsplatz station (U1/U2/U4).
