Vienna City Hall (Rathaus)

Innere Stadt, Vienna

Overview

Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) was designed by architect Friedrich von Schmidt and built 1872-1883 in Neo-Gothic style, a defining landmark of the Ringstrasse. Atop its 98m central tower stands the iron knight statue 'Rathausmann,' seemingly watching over the city, and the building houses the mayor's office and city council. Free guided tours (Mon/Wed/Fri at 13:00) reveal the ornate ceremonial halls and grand staircase, and the Rathausplatz square hosts a summer film festival and a winter Christmas market. Free admission. U2 Rathaus station or tram 1/2/D/71 to Burgtheater.
