Overview
Founded in 1808 by King João VI of Portugal, the 54-hectare Rio Botanical Garden is one of Brazil's foremost botanical research institutions. The magnificent Royal Palm Avenue (Aleia de Palmeiras Imperiais) at the entrance features 134 palms planted in 1842, creating an awe-inspiring scene. Over 6,500 plant species share the grounds with monkeys, toucans, and sloths. Other highlights include a Japanese garden, cactus greenhouse, and Amazonian water lily pond.

Visit on a weekday morning for a quiet experience. Early morning is the best time to spot monkeys and toucans. Bring a hat and sunscreen as UV is strong.
