Overview
Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) is a 396m granite peak at the entrance to Rio's Guanabara Bay. A two-stage cable car takes you to the summit, where you can take in Rio's iconic views — Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado, Copacabana Beach, and the Niterói Bridge. The cable car has run since 1912 and is itself a historic attraction, and the moment at sunset when the sky turns red and the city lights flicker on is one of Rio's greatest highlights.
Opening Hours
Daily 08:00-21:00 (cable car runs every 20 minutes).
Travel Tips
Time your ascent for sunset to catch the best views. Don't skip the bar at the first stop (Urca Hill). Late afternoon helps you avoid the worst of the crowds.
