Overview
Santa Teresa is a bohemian hillside district above downtown Rio, famous for its yellow tram (bondinho) running since 1877. Cobblestone streets lined with 19th-century coffee baron mansions now host artist studios, indie galleries, and charming cafés and restaurants. The tram was suspended for four years after a 2011 accident, reopening in 2015 after restoration, and now runs on a tourist fare of R$20, with the route from the Lapa Arches up the hill being the most popular. The whole district is a designated national heritage site and is considered Rio's most artistic neighborhood.
