Overview
The Lapa Arches (Arcos da Lapa), built in 1750, are a 270m-long, 17.6m-high aqueduct and one of Rio's most impressive colonial structures. Originally built to carry water from the Carioca River to the city, the arches now support the iconic yellow Santa Teresa tram (bondinho) that crosses overhead. On Friday and Saturday nights, the entire Lapa district comes alive with samba clubs, live music bars, and street parties — Brazil's ultimate nightlife experience.
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours (samba clubs: typically 22:00-04:00).
Travel Tips
Visit on Friday or Saturday night for Lapa's true nightlife. The samba club Carioca da Gema is a local favorite. Be mindful of your belongings at night.
