Overview

Confeitaria Colombo, opened in 1894 by Portuguese immigrant Joaquim Borges de Meireles, is Rio's iconic belle-époque café. Its giant crystal mirrors imported from Antwerp, rosewood-carved furniture, and the stained-glass ceiling of the upstairs tearoom (added in 1922) are showstoppers, and historical figures from composer Villa-Lobos to President Getúlio Vargas were regulars. Designated a cultural heritage site of Rio, it's often ranked among the world's most beautiful cafés. Entry is free; food and drinks are charged separately.
