Overview

Instituto Butantan is a world-renowned biomedical research institute studying snake, spider, and scorpion venom to develop antivenoms and vaccines, spread across a 47-hectare campus with a Historical Museum, Biological Museum, and Microbiology Museum. The Biological Museum lets visitors safely observe a variety of venomous snakes and tropical reptiles, and every Thursday a 'Mão na Cobra' (Hand on the Snake) activity lets visitors touch a snake under researcher supervision. The gardens and walking trails on the grounds are also popular with families. Admission is R$10 for adults, R$5 for students, and free for children under 7 and seniors.
