Overview
Liberdade is an Asian cultural district in central São Paulo that hosts the largest Japanese community outside Japan. Red torii arches mark the street entrances, and Japanese-style lampposts and cherry trees create an exotic streetscape. Japanese, Korean, and Chinese restaurants, Asian supermarkets, and manga/anime shops cluster here. The Sunday Liberdade market serves gyoza, yakisoba, takoyaki, and other Asian street foods.
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours (Sunday market: 09:00-18:00).
Travel Tips
The Sunday market is the liveliest time, with affordable Asian food everywhere. The Japanese Immigration Museum nearby is worth a visit too.
