Lachine Canal National Historic Site

Le Sud-Ouest, Montreal

Overview

The Lachine Canal was built between 1821 and 1825 to allow ships to bypass the dangerous Lachine Rapids and is now a National Historic Site managed by Parks Canada. A roughly 14 km walking and cycling path runs the length of the canal from the Old Port to Lake Saint-Louis, passing industrial heritage sites such as old mills, grain elevators, and Atwater Market along the way. The park area is free year-round and open daily from sunrise to 11 p.m., with about 13 km groomed for snowshoeing and winter cycling in the colder months. The Old Port starting point is a short walk from Square-Victoria métro station, with BIXI bike-share stations available along the route.
