Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)

Altstadt, Lucerne

Overview

Built in 1333, this 204m covered wooden bridge crosses the Reuss River diagonally and is the oldest of its kind in Europe. Inside, 111 triangular paintings from the 17th century depict Lucerne and Swiss history. The octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm) midway was once used as a prison and torture chamber. Partly destroyed by fire in 1993 but since restored, the bridge is adorned with flowers in summer for an even more enchanting look. Free to visit. 3-minute walk from Lucerne main station.

Opening Hours
