Overview
Also known as Vierwaldstättersee ('Lake of the Four Forest Cantons'), Lake Lucerne has a complex fjord-like shape explored by steamers and modern boats. Five historic paddle steamers dating from 1847 are attractions in their own right, and the views of Pilatus, Rigi, and Bürgenstock from the water are Swiss travel at its finest. The Rütli meadow, birthplace of the William Tell legend, is only accessible from the lake. Free with Swiss Travel Pass; otherwise CHF 9-50 per section. Boats depart from the pier right in front of Lucerne station.
Opening Hours
Cruises: 09:00-19:00 in summer; reduced winter schedule; varies by route.
Travel Tips
First class has an outdoor deck perfect for photography. Steamers are slower than modern boats but far more atmospheric; they run in summer only.
