Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal)

Altstadt, Lucerne

Overview

Carved into a sandstone cliff face in 1820, this 10m dying-lion sculpture commemorates 786 Swiss Guards who fell defending Louis XVI during the French Revolution in 1792. The expression of the mortally wounded lion conveys profound sorrow, leading Mark Twain to call it 'the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.' The adjacent Glacier Garden (Gletschergarten) makes for a natural pairing. Free to visit. About 10 minutes on foot from Lucerne station.

Opening Hours

Open 24 hours (illuminated at night).

Travel Tips

Visit early in the morning to avoid tour-bus crowds. The Glacier Garden right next door is worth a combined visit.
