Overview
The Spreuer Bridge is a roofed wooden footbridge over the Reuss River, completed in 1408. After the Chapel Bridge fire in 1993, it became Lucerne's oldest surviving bridge. Its name comes from the historical right to dump grain chaff (Spreu) into the river only from this bridge. Inside, 56 early-17th-century 'Dance of Death' paintings line the beams, giving it a quieter, more atmospheric feel than the tourist-thronged Chapel Bridge. A small bridge chapel from 1568 stands at its southern end. Admission is free and it's open to cross at any time. It's within a 5-minute walk of Mühlenplatz in the Old Town, easily combined with a visit to the Chapel Bridge.
Opening Hours
Open 24 hours, free to cross.
