Overview
Commissioned by Charles III and opened in 1785, the General Archive of the Indies holds a vast collection of some 43,000 files and 80 million pages, ranging from Columbus's voyage records to colonial administrative documents. Originally built as a merchants' exchange (Lonja) in Renaissance style, it stands between the Cathedral and the Alcázar, and all three sites were jointly designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Inside, original documents and maps are on display, offering a vivid glimpse into the Age of Discovery and the history of the New World. Free admission is a major draw for travelers.
