Overview
Officially the Basilica of Our Lady of Hope Macarena, it stands in the Macarena district. The Virgin statue housed here is renowned for her tearful expression and richly embroidered golden robes, and the procession that carries her through the streets during Holy Week is one of the most passionately anticipated events in all of Seville. The adjoining museum displays the ornate embroidered mantles and silver processional float used during Holy Week, offering deep insight into this tradition. Entry to the church itself is free, with a separate fee for the museum. Nearby stands the Macarena Gate, a remnant of Seville's old city walls, worth a visit as well.
Opening Hours
Mon-Sat 8am-2pm, 5pm-9pm; Sun/holidays 9:30am-2pm, 5pm-9pm (varies seasonally)
Travel Tips
During Holy Week the basilica gets extremely crowded, so plan extra time. Please be quiet and respectful in front of the Virgin's statue.
