Overview
Founded in 1887 and moved to its current Neo-Renaissance building in 1897, the Ateneum is Finland's national gallery, holding about 4,300 paintings and sculptures centered on the golden age of Finnish art (1880s-1910s). Works by Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Helene Schjerfbeck hang alongside European Impressionist masters like Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. Located directly across from Central Station, it's the flagship of the three museums under the Finnish National Gallery.
