Overview
Begun in 1748 under Swedish rule, Suomenlinna spreads across six islands and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nicknamed the 'Gibraltar of Finland', its layers of Swedish, Russian, and Finnish history are still visible in the bastions. Walking the ramparts opens up sweeping Baltic views, and museums, cafes, and restaurants are scattered within the fortress. A 15-minute ferry from Helsinki's Market Square brings you to the islands, which are still home to about 800 residents. Island entry free (museums about EUR 8 each). 15-minute HSL ferry from Market Square.
Opening Hours
Islands open 24 hours; museums 10:00-18:00 (seasonal variation)
Travel Tips
The ferry from Market Square takes 15 minutes and accepts the HSL transit card. Plan 2-3 hours to explore the whole island chain.
