Overview
Designed by Carl Ludvig Engel after Helsinki became capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland in 1812, Senate Square is the city's heart, framed by Neoclassical buildings. A statue of Tsar Alexander II stands at the center, with Helsinki Cathedral to the east, the Government Palace to the west, and the main building of the University of Helsinki to the south — symbolizing Finland's four pillars of power. Every May 1 (Vappu), students place a graduation cap on Alexander's statue in a beloved tradition, and the square transforms into a huge Christmas market each December. Free to visit. Tram 1/7 to Senaatintori stop.
Opening Hours
