Overview
Begun around 1280, Turku Castle is Finland's oldest medieval fortress and served as the administrative center of Finland during Swedish rule. The Gothic main castle and the Renaissance-era bailey palace house a museum filled with medieval weapons, armor, and royal garments. The King's Chamber, where Gustav Vasa stayed when he visited Turku, has been restored. Standing at the mouth of the Aura River, the castle creates a postcard scene alongside the working harbor.
