Overview
Consecrated in 1300, Turku Cathedral is the mother church of Finnish Lutheranism, a national shrine, and Finland's most important religious building. It began as a small wooden church and grew over centuries to its present scale, with a 97-meter bell tower that defines Turku's skyline. Inside are the tombs of major figures from Finnish history, including the coffin of Swedish queen Catherine Jagiellon. The cathedral bells ringing at noon are part of daily life in the city.
