Overview

An extinct volcano rising 251m in the heart of Edinburgh, within Holyrood Park. The hike from the city center takes about 1.5 hours round trip, and the summit rewards you with a 360-degree panorama of Edinburgh Castle, the Old Town, and the Firth of Forth. Formed by volcanic activity around 350 million years ago, it is also geologically significant. The name is linked to the legend of King Arthur. Free entry. About 15 minutes on foot from the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the foot of the Royal Mile to the trailhead.

Travel Tips

Walking from the Royal Mile toward Holyroodhouse leads naturally to the trailhead. Sunrise hikes are popular — bring a windproof jacket, as it can be gusty at the top.
