Overview
Founded in the 12th century with nearly 900 years of history, St Giles' is famous as the church where John Knox, leader of the Scottish Reformation, once preached. Its distinctive crown-shaped spire is a landmark visible throughout the Royal Mile, and the ornate Thistle Chapel with its stained glass reflects the history of Scotland's royal order of knighthood. In 2022 it was also where Queen Elizabeth II's coffin lay at rest. Donations encouraged for entry. Located in the heart of the Royal Mile.
