Overview
Just a 10-minute walk from central Edinburgh, Dean Village feels like another world. For 800 years from the 12th century onward, 11 mills here ground the grain that fed Edinburgh. As industrial milling declined in the late 19th century, philanthropist John Henderson redeveloped the area as a residential complex in the 1880s. Red sandstone Victorian houses, a clock tower on the bridge, and walks along the Water of Leith make it an Instagram favorite. The adjacent Water of Leith Walkway leads to the Modern Art Gallery and the Royal Botanic Garden in about 20 minutes. Free to visit. About 15 minutes on foot from Princes Street.
