Overview
This triangular fortress sits on a 37m cliff west of Dubrovnik's Old Town, with records dating its origins back to the 11th century, making it one of the city's oldest defensive structures. Legend says citizens built it in a hurry to fend off a Venetian invasion, and the entrance bears the inscription 'Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world.' It gained fame as King's Landing's Red Keep in HBO's Game of Thrones, and in summer it hosts open-air Shakespeare performances. Ticket sold separately from the city walls (about EUR 10). 5-minute walk from Pile Gate.
Travel Tips
A separate ticket from the city walls is required, so check ahead. The summit view of the walls and sea is spectacular.
