Overview
Built in the early 16th century as the customs house and mint of the Republic of Ragusa, Sponza Palace uniquely blends Gothic ground-floor arches with a Renaissance upper floor. One of the few buildings to survive the 1667 earthquake and later damage nearly intact, it now serves as the state archives, preserving medieval documents. Its courtyard holds the somber 'Memorial Room' honoring citizens killed during the 1991-1992 Siege of Dubrovnik. Free entry to the Memorial Room. 1-minute walk from the eastern end of Stradun.
