Overview

Designated in 1960 as Croatia's oldest national park, it covers the western third of Mljet island, featuring two saltwater lakes (Veliko and Malo Jezero) surrounded by dense pine forest. A 12th-century Benedictine monastery sits on a small islet in the middle of the Great Lake, reachable by boat, and cycling or walking the lakeside and forest trails is a favorite way to explore. The island is even thought to be where Odysseus spent seven years with Calypso in Homer's Odyssey. Admission about EUR 30 (summer, boat included). About 1.5-2 hours by ferry from Dubrovnik.
